Ernie Lai King | Director Head of Deneys Reitz Tax Services
Ernie Lai King is head of the Deneys Reitz Tax Division specialising in structured finance, corporate restructuring, mergers and acquisitions, international tax and dispute resolution. Ernest has significant experience providing international tax advice, including on transfer pricing, interpretation of "permanent establishment", cross border VAT issues, withholding tax relief, taxation of business profits, jurisdictional right to tax, income from employment, capital gains tax, source of income, etc.
Ernest´s international experience includes advising on tax issues in respect of the following countries: Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Angola, Swaziland, Australia, United Kingdom, Luxembourg, United States of America, Italy, Israel, and Switzerland.
Ernest was appointed a member of the Income Tax Special Court of Appeal (a State President appointment) in 1993, and is past chairman of the SA Chamber of Business Tax Committee. He has extensive experience in the commercial sector, having served as the Group Tax Consultant for two major listed Top20 companies over a period of 16 years.
He regularly engages with the Commissioner´s Office of the SA Revenue Services and National Treasury on general tax matters, new tax legislation prior to their promulgation into law and tax policy. He was invited to participate in nation-wide seminars on Capital Gains Tax, soon after its introduction into South Africa, conducted by the Office of the Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service, specifically addressing the impact of CGT on trusts.
He appears before the South African Parliamentary Joint Standing Committee on Finance to comment on tax reform and is regularly quoted in the financial media. He is a guest lecturer on the post-graduate tax courses at the University of the Witwatersrand and sits on the board of advisors - MCom Taxation (Wits).
He has a total of 24 years experience as a tax specialist.
