Africa Legal’s team continues to grow

After a line of recent appointments, Deneys Reitz’s Africa specialised division, Africa Legal, has recruited senior funds and corporate lawyer Lance Roderick from The Royal Bank of Scotland Plc to join its international team. Lance is an English Solicitor and also qualified as a South African Attorney. He worked in London for over eight years, and before joining The Royal Bank of Scotland Plc in 2004 he was a member of top city firm Simmons & Simmons’s financial markets team. “This high-level appointment demonstrates the firm’s Africa focus and continues the strong growth of its pan-African practice”, says Deneys Reitz Chairman, Michael Hart. “Our decision to invest in our pan-African and international capabilities, made some years ago, has been vindicated and is obviously meeting the needs of our international and South African clients”. The move builds on the firm’s success in 2006/7, when it was awarded the African Law Firm of the Year award by Chambers & Partners, for which it was shortlisted again in 2007/8.

Africa Legal co-founder Julian Jackson (formerly with Clifford Chance’s International Projects Group) says “Lance’s appointment will underpin Africa Legal’s positioning in the legal market by bringing further international experience to our strong capability in funds and commercial work. Lance’s top-tier funds experience in the UK and internationally will contribute to our ability to service this important area of our work, and he is a valuable addition to our already substantial English law capability and depth of experience”.

Africa Legal has five dedicated English qualified lawyers based in Johannesburg, focused exclusively on cross-border work, three of whom are also qualified as attorneys. This team works together with over 200 legal professionals at Deneys Reitz, including some three further solicitors within the firm whose practices are not exclusively Africa focused.
