Deneys Reitz scoops "African Law firm of the Year" - Chambers Global Awards 2006

Francis Neate, President of the International Bar Association, congratulates Kevin Cron, head of the Commercial Department of Deneys Reitz Inc on the award.
At a gala dinner in London on Thursday 16 November 2006, Deneys Reitz was honoured at the Chambers Global Awards as the African Law Firm of the Year. The most prestigious event on the legal calendar, the awards attract over 800 of the cream of the legal profession from around the globe.
“Against the backdrop of the world´s major international firms - and as one of only two African firms nominated in this category - this award is testimony to the hard work of all those involved in the development of the Africa Legal brand and to those who have helped create the great South African practice that is Deneys Reitz,” says Chairman, Michael Hart.
“Deneys Reitz made the decision in 2003 to expand its African reach by establishing a pan-African practice. Africa Legal, which operates as a division of the firm, is staffed by English solicitors and South African lawyers with international deal experience”, Hart explains, “our client base includes the European and American development agencies and, increasingly, South African and multinational corporates.”
“Africa Legal is now an established brand operating in alliance with member firms in nine African countries. Its work focuses mainly on banking, project finance, M&A and private equity. It also provides international tax and competition law advice.” says Hart “The track record of transactions involving some twenty African jurisdictions no doubt influenced the judges in reviewing the panel of finalists which included international heavyweights Clifford Chance, Linklaters, Norton Rose and White & Case.”
The award was accepted by Kevin Cron, head of Deneys Reitz Commercial Department and Julian Jackson from Africa Legal. Africa Legal alliance firms from Uganda and Mozambique were in attendance.
